MALL PLANS: Developers have presented modified plans to the Ames city council on how they want to renovate North Grand Mall | News
The holiday shopping season may be over, but the North Grand Mall in Ames is looking to continue a remodeling process it started in 2007. That year the mall owners unveiled "Streets of North Grand" a plan to alter the south end of the mall area.
"That plan never went forward, except for the Walgreens Store," said Charlie Kuester who is an Ames City Planner. "The owners of the mall are seeking changes to that plan to do something different," he added.
GK Developers in Chicago came to the Ames Planning and Zoning Board Wednesday to get a few alterations approved to their original plan. A number of buildings south to 24th Street will be removed and will make way for new retail and some restaurants on out lots. The former Sears store would be remodeled and divided for new retail outlets.
The Ames City Council will consider the plans at a meeting next week. If the council says okay, then it's possible some of the old buildings could be demolished next spring, with some remodeling new spaces could be open for new retail stores in the fall.
